Back to all guidesThe best website hosting for a small business in the UK
How to choose the best website hosting for a small business: what matters (speed, support, backups), what does not, and how the main UK hosts compare.
What actually decides whether a host is good for a small business is speed, support when something breaks, and whether your site is backed up every day without you having to think about it. Price matters far less than most comparison pages suggest, because a decent UK host at almost any price point will run a five to fifteen page business site without trouble.
That is the useful starting point for anyone weighing up website hosting for small businesses: work out what you actually need, then choose on the handful of things that matter for a site your size. This guide covers what to look for, how some of the main UK hosts compare on facts you can check yourself, and when the choice of host stops making much difference at all. If you have not yet worked out what a host should cost you, our guide to web hosting costs in the UK covers that separately, and the full cost picture for a small business website covers hosting alongside design and build.
What makes hosting good for a small business
Most small business sites are a handful of pages: a homepage, a few service or product pages, a contact page, maybe a blog. That kind of site does not need enormous storage or huge bandwidth allowances. It needs to stay up, load quickly, and be recoverable if anything goes wrong.
In practice, four things do most of the work:
- Backups. A host that backs up your site automatically, every day, without an extra fee, means a hacked plugin or a bad update is an afternoon's inconvenience rather than a rebuild from scratch.
- Uptime. Every host will quote a headline uptime figure. What matters more day to day is what happens when the server does have a problem, and how quickly it is fixed.
- Support you can reach. Live chat that answers in minutes beats a ticket queue that answers in two days, especially if your site takes bookings or enquiries.
- A straightforward way to manage your domain and email. If your domain, hosting and email all sit with different providers and different logins, small changes take longer than they should.
Storage, bandwidth caps and the number of websites a plan allows matter far less for most small businesses than the comparison tables suggest, because a typical brochure or service site uses a small fraction of even an entry-level allowance.
The best website hosts for UK small businesses compared
Rather than score hosts against each other with invented numbers, here is what each one states on its own UK site, checked directly, so you can weigh it against what your business needs.
| Host | Entry price | Renewal price | UK data centre | Support | Backups | Money-back guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20i | A pound for the first month (Startup plan) | Ten pounds a month | London available as a choice of data centre | 24/7 live chat and tickets, UK-based team | Free daily automated backups on all paid plans | Not stated on the page checked |
| IONOS UK | Three pounds a month for six months (Standard plan) | Six pounds a month | European infrastructure; exact UK site not stated on the page checked | 24/7 support across multiple channels | Malware scanning included; backup detail not stated on the page checked | 30-day money-back guarantee |
| Fasthosts | A pound a month for three months (Start plan) | Under six pounds a month | UK data centres, including a Tier IV-certified site in Worcester | 24/7 phone and online support | Not stated on the page checked | 30-day money-back guarantee |
| Krystal | Seven pounds a month flat (Amethyst plan) | Seven pounds a month, no introductory price rise | Not stated on the page checked | Live chat, tickets and email on all plans; phone weekdays 9am to 8pm; 24/7 emergency phone from the Sapphire plan up | Daily backups on entry plans, 4-hourly from the Emerald plan up | 60-day money-back guarantee |
A few things worth noting from that table. IONOS and Fasthosts both lead with a low introductory price that rises at renewal, which is common in UK hosting and worth building into your budget rather than being caught out by. Krystal charges the same price from day one and offers a longer refund window. 20i is the only one of the four that lets you pick London specifically as your data centre location, which some businesses ask for on principle even though it makes little practical difference to how fast a UK visitor's site loads.
None of this points to a single right answer. A sole trader who wants one plan, one bill and does not expect to call support often is served well by any of the four. A business that handles bookings or payments and cannot afford downtime should weight the support hours and the backup frequency more heavily than the headline price.
Best website and domain host if you want everything in one place
If you would rather manage your domain, hosting and email through one account and one invoice, look at what each host bundles in. Fasthosts states up to five free domain names included with its plans, and IONOS includes a domain and an SSL certificate free for the first year on eligible extensions including .uk and .com. Both remove one of the more fiddly parts of running a small business site, which is keeping a domain registered with one company and hosting with another, and remembering to renew both on time.
The trade-off is usually price. A free domain bundled into a hosting plan is rarely the cheapest way to register a domain on its own, so if you already own your domain and are happy managing it separately, an all-in-one bundle buys convenience rather than savings. If you are starting from nothing and want the fewest logins to keep track of, it is worth the small premium.
Speed and why it decides whether customers stay
A slow site costs you customers before they have read a word of your copy. Someone searching on their phone for a plumber, a dentist or a solicitor will often leave a page that has not loaded within a few seconds and try the next result instead. That is true whichever host you choose.
Hosting is one part of speed, not the whole of it. The data centre location, the server hardware and how many other sites share that server all play a role, which is why a cheap, oversold shared plan can feel slow even from a reputable host. But the site itself usually matters more: large uncompressed images, bloated page builders and unnecessary plug-ins will slow a site down on good hosting just as much as bad. If your site already feels sluggish, it is worth checking how a small business site should actually be built before assuming the host is to blame.
Support: the thing you only value at 9pm on a Friday
Nobody reads a hosting plan's support hours closely until the site is down and it is out of office hours. This is where the four hosts above genuinely differ. 20i and Fasthosts both state 24/7 support as standard. IONOS states 24/7 support across its plans too. Krystal includes phone support on weekdays from 9am to 8pm, with 24/7 emergency phone support reserved for its higher-priced plans, so a business on an entry plan there is relying on live chat, tickets or email outside those hours.
If your business depends on the site being live at all times, for example it takes online bookings or payments, treat support hours as a genuine deciding factor rather than small print. If your site is a digital business card that a short outage would barely affect, it matters much less.
When hosting choice stops mattering
Once a host clears the basics, meaning it backs your site up automatically, answers support requests within a reasonable time, and keeps to its stated uptime, further money spent moving to a more expensive plan or a more prestigious-sounding host tends to buy very little extra for a typical small business site. The bigger difference is almost always the site itself: whether the pages answer what a customer is actually asking, whether the site is quick and easy to use on a phone, and whether someone keeps it updated once it is live.
That is the point at which it is worth stepping back and looking at what a small business website actually costs in full, hosting included, rather than optimising the hosting line on its own.
We build and look after small business websites, including the hosting and technical side, so a client never has to compare plans like the ones above themselves. Every site we manage has its results tracked on a live dashboard, so you can see how it is performing rather than take our word for it. If you would like that handled for you, see our website build and care service.
