Back to all guidesSEO for heating and gas engineers: how boiler work finds you
How heating and gas engineers get found for boiler repairs, services and installs, why a plumber page will not do it, the heating calendar, and what to expect.
SEO for heating and gas engineers comes down to being the business a homeowner finds when the boiler fails, when the annual service is due, and when they start pricing a replacement or a heat pump, in the areas you cover. Search for SEO for heating engineers yourself and you get a run of agency sales pages, none of them written around the shape of a heating year.
From the first cold snap in October to the end of February, the phone rings with breakdowns, no hot water, and radiators that stay cold. By July it goes quiet, because a boiler that limps through summer gets ignored until it fails again. The searches follow the same curve, and the curve decides when the work on your website has to happen. This guide is the heating version of how trade businesses win work online, written for a Gas Safe registered business of one to five engineers.
What customers type when they need a heating engineer
Customers search by the job or the symptom, and they add "near me" or a town far more often than they type "heating engineer" on its own. DataForSEO's UK data for September 2026 puts "boiler service" at 14,800 searches a month, "boiler service near me" and "heating engineer near me" at 9,900 each, and "gas engineer near me" at 8,100.
They sort into four groups, and each group wants a different page: breakdowns and emergencies, planned work such as services and certificates, big jobs such as a new boiler, and the growing one, heat pumps and the grant.
| Search | UK searches a month | What the customer wants | Page that should answer it |
|---|---|---|---|
| boiler repair near me | 6,600 | Someone out today, phone number first | Boiler repair page for their town |
| emergency boiler repair | 1,900 | Out of hours cover and a callout time | Emergency repair page |
| no hot water | 1,600 | A quick check, then a number to call | Boiler repair page with a fault checklist |
| radiator not heating up | 3,600 | A cause, and whether to call anyone | Short guide linking to the repair page |
| boiler service | 14,800 | What is included, how long, what it costs | Boiler service page |
| boiler service near me | 9,900 | A local engineer with dates free | Boiler service page for their town |
| gas safety certificate | 9,900 | What it covers and how to book | Gas safety certificate page |
| landlord gas safety certificate | 1,900 | Booking around tenants, certificate by email | Landlord page |
| heating engineer near me | 9,900 | A local business with reviews and a number | Google Business Profile and home page |
| gas safe engineer near me | 6,600 | The registration number, visible | Google Business Profile and home page |
| new boiler cost | 8,100 | A price range and what moves it | Boiler installation page with cost guidance |
| boiler installation near me | 5,400 | An installer who covers their area | Boiler installation page for their town |
| boiler upgrade scheme | 4,400 | Whether they qualify and how much | Heat pump and grant page |
| heat pump installers near me | 880 | An MCS certified installer nearby | Heat pump page for their town |
These are UK-wide totals. Your share is the slice from the towns you cover.
Emergency work and planned work are two different searches
An emergency searcher wants a phone number and a time. A planned searcher wants proof, price context, and reviews, and will read most of the page before picking up the phone. Put both on one page and you serve neither, because the opening lines that reassure one reader slow the other down.
Someone typing "no hot water" at seven in the morning is standing in a cold kitchen. The page they land on needs the phone number in the first line, the areas covered in the second, and the hours and callout arrangement in the third, all readable without scrolling. Everything else can wait until further down.
Someone typing "boiler service near me" in September is comparing you with two or three other businesses and wants to know what the service includes, how long it takes, how it is priced, and what other customers said. That page opens with what is included and what it costs, then reviews, then the Gas Safe details, then the booking route, with a form and a calendar alongside the phone number.
The result is two pages with two sets of opening lines and two calls to action: "call now" against "book a slot".
Why a plumber's page does not win heating searches
Google matches the job in the search to the job on the page, so a page about plumbing competes for plumbing searches and loses heating searches to pages written about boilers. A general "plumber" page is up against all the plumbers in your area. A "boiler repair Orpington" page is up against the handful of businesses that have written one.
We see the same thing from the other side. Over the last 90 days, our own Search Console shows searches for "SEO for heating engineers" landing on our page for plumbers, because it was the closest thing we had. That is the wrong page, and it is the same wrong answer a homeowner gets when "boiler not working" lands on a page about leaking taps. This article exists to fix it on our side.
The fix on yours is a page per heating job, in the words the customer used, with the town named. Before writing any of them, check which of these searches you show up for and see which page Google is sending people to.
The heating calendar: when demand peaks and when to build
Demand for heating work peaks in October and again in the coldest weeks of December and January, and a page has to be live by June to be earning when the peak arrives. The same DataForSEO data, month by month across the twelve months to August 2026, shows how steep the curve is.
"Boiler repair near me" was searched 14,800 times in October 2025 and 2,900 times a month in June, July, and August 2026, about five times higher. "Heating engineer near me" went from 18,100 in October 2025 to 4,400 in June and July 2026, about four times. "Emergency boiler repair" was 4,400 in December 2025 and January 2026 against 480 in July 2026, about nine times. "Radiator not heating up" swung hardest: 9,900 in November 2025, 110 in July 2026.
Planned work has a gentler curve. "Boiler service" reached 27,100 in September and October 2025 and fell to 8,100 in May 2026, still a large number for a quiet month. That is the summer work worth chasing: customers who are planning rather than panicking, with fewer competitors bidding for their attention.
The practical point is lead time. Google takes months rather than days to find a new page, index it, and trust it enough to show it for a competitive local search. A boiler repair page published in June has settled and is earning by October. The same page published in November arrives after the first cold snap, when the businesses that were ready have taken the work. The wider argument, across the other trades, is in seasonal demand and the trade calendar.
Heat pumps break the pattern. "Heat pump installers near me" sat between 480 and 1,600 searches a month across the year with no strong winter peak, and "boiler upgrade scheme" peaked at 6,600 in November 2025 and January 2026 against 2,900 in August 2026, a smaller swing tied to grants and planning rather than breakdowns.
Gas Safe, MCS, and manufacturer accreditations as proof
Your Gas Safe registration number belongs in the text of your website and in your Google Business Profile, because it is the one credential a customer can verify in under a minute. Gas Safe Register describes itself as the official list of gas engineers, states that all gas businesses and their engineers must be on the register to carry out gas work legally, and lets anyone check a business by name, registration number, phone number, engineer name, or ID number.
Google and AI assistants read the text on your pages, and a badge image on its own tells them nothing. Write the registration number near the top of the home page, repeat it in the footer, and add it to the business description on your profile. Setting up your Google Business Profile covers the rest of the profile.
MCS matters for heat pumps. MCS is the UK's quality mark for small-scale renewable energy technologies, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs through MCS certified installers, so a heat pump page without your MCS certificate number is missing the thing the grant customer has been told to look for.
Manufacturer accreditations round it out. Approved installer status with the makes you fit most often comes with longer warranties, and a customer comparing quotes cares about the warranty more than the badge. Say which manufacturers you are approved by and what the extended warranty is, on the installation page where the "new boiler cost" reader is looking.
One page per job per area
You need a page for each job in each area you cover, because that is the shape of the search. Boiler repair, boiler service, boiler installation, heat pumps, and landlord gas safety certificates, each written for each town, is the structure that lets a "boiler service Sidcup" search land on a page about boiler servicing in Sidcup.
Say you cover Bromley, Orpington, Sidcup, Bexley, Dartford, and Sevenoaks. Five jobs across six towns is thirty pages, and that is the job. It is a lot, and that is also why it works. Local service pages for trades explains the approach in full.
Keep each page honest by putting something on it that is true of that town and that job and of nothing else: for a boiler repair page in Bexley, the estates you work on, the boiler makes you find there most often, how quickly you can reach it, and a review from a Bexley customer about a repair. A paragraph of that per page beats a template with the town name swapped.
Build them in the order the money arrives: repair and service pages for your home town first, then installation, then the outlying towns, then heat pumps. Publish from spring onwards so the first set has settled before October.
Reviews that mention the job
A review that says "fixed the boiler the same day in Sidcup" does more for you than one that says "great service", because it names the job and the place the next customer is searching for. Google can surface review text that matches a search, and an AI assistant asked for a heating engineer in Sidcup leans on what your reviews say.
Ask at the right moment and mention the job when you ask. The right moment is the sign-off: the boiler is running, the customer is warm again, and the engineer is packing the van. Ask then, in person, and follow with a text that carries the link. In the request, name the job and the area in passing: "if you could mention it was the boiler service in Bexley, it helps other people in Bexley find us". That is a reminder of the two details that matter, and the words they choose stay their own.
Reply to each review and name the job and the area again, because the reply is text on your profile too. Over a winter, that builds a profile that reads like a list of the jobs you want more of. How to get more Google reviews covers the routine, who to ask, and how to handle the bad ones.
Heat pumps and the grant: the search that runs on a different calendar
Heat pump searches do not spike with the cold, because the customer is planning a project rather than reacting to a breakdown, and the page that wins them reads like a project guide rather than an emergency notice. Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, a property owner in England or Wales replacing a fossil fuel heating system can get seven and a half thousand pounds towards an air source or ground source heat pump, and five thousand pounds towards a biomass boiler.
The mechanics shape the page. The installer applies on the customer's behalf through Ofgem, the grant comes off the quotation and the invoice, and the installer has to commission the system within 120 days of applying. The gov.uk page sends homeowners to MCS certified installers for quotes, so MCS certification is the entry ticket, and the "boiler upgrade scheme" search, 4,400 a month in the same data, belongs to whoever explains that process most clearly.
The searcher wants cost context, a timeline, and evidence. Cost context means what the grant covers, what it does not, and what changes the total: radiator upgrades, a hot water cylinder, the state of the insulation. Timeline means survey, quote, application, install, and commissioning, in order. Evidence means photos of your own installs and what customers noticed about running costs afterwards, in their words. Your MCS certificate number belongs near the top, for the same reason the Gas Safe number belongs on the boiler pages.
What to expect month by month
Expect months of work before the phone changes, and expect the first sign of progress to be appearing for more of the right searches rather than more calls. Anyone guaranteeing page one in a set number of weeks is describing something no honest agency can deliver, and the guarantee itself is the warning sign.
The first stretch is building: the job-and-area pages, the profile, the registration numbers in the text, the reviews routine. Then the first movement: your pages start appearing for the smaller, more specific searches, "landlord gas safety certificate Orpington" before "boiler service near me", and Search Console shows more of the right phrases each month. Calls follow visibility, with a lag.
How long each stretch takes depends on how long your site has existed, how many reviews you have, and how many competitors in your towns have already done this work. A report worth reading each month shows which searches your site appears for and which page Google chose, how many enquiries came in and where from, and what was built or fixed. If it only shows a position number for a handful of phrases, ask for the rest.
SEO Pages builds websites and local pages that get trade businesses found on Google, on Google Maps, and in AI assistants, and plumbing and heating is the trade we know best. Everything above is how we approach a heating business, and the same approach for construction firms shows how it changes for bigger, slower jobs.
