How to get lots of 5 star Google reviews?

Build a system, then let volume do the work: ask every customer the day the job finishes, send the direct review link, follow up once, and work back through your past customer list at a steady pace. There is no compliant shortcut, but the compliant route is faster than most owners expect.

Lots of five-star reviews is the output of a boring, repeatable system applied to work that customers were happy with. The system has four parts: an ask after every completed job, a direct link that makes the review a one-minute task, one polite reminder for the people who meant to do it and forgot, and pacing so the reviews arrive steadily rather than in suspicious bursts.

The biggest untapped source is almost always the past. Every customer you served before you started asking is a review that was never requested. Worked through politely, a back book compounds quickly: if one in ten past customers responds, a list of 300 old jobs is 30 new reviews, which for most local trades is the difference between mid-table and leading the map result.

Do the reactivation slowly. A profile that has gathered 15 reviews in five years and suddenly receives 40 in a fortnight looks exactly like purchased reviews to Google's filters, even when every one is genuine. Spread requests over weeks, and the same reviews land safely.

Do not chase perfection. Research from Northwestern's Spiegel Research Center found purchase likelihood peaks when ratings sit in the 4.2 to 4.7 range, because a flawless 5.0 across hundreds of reviews reads as too good to be true. A 4.8 with 150 reviews beats a 5.0 with 9, in trust and in visibility.

And never gate. Sending happy customers to Google while diverting unhappy ones to a private feedback form breaches Google's policy, and since April 2025 commissioning misleading review activity carries real legal risk in the UK. Ask everyone, take the occasional rough review, and let your reply and your ratio speak.
