Does Google punish fake reviews?
Yes, on both sides of the transaction. Fake reviews are removed, profiles that benefit from them can have new reviews blocked and, for UK businesses, a public warning notice under Google's January 2025 undertakings to the CMA. Repeat rogue reviewers have their posts deleted and are banned from posting more.
Google's sanctions ladder starts quietly and gets loud. At the bottom, individual fake reviews are filtered or removed, often without the business ever knowing. Above that, a profile linked to suspicious review activity can have incoming reviews blocked or held while patterns are investigated, freezing growth exactly where the business hoped to accelerate it.
The UK-specific rung is the newest and the sharpest. Under the undertakings Google gave the Competition and Markets Authority in January 2025, UK businesses found using fake reviews to boost their star rating face warning alerts shown on their profile. For a local trade, a visible notice that the reviews may not be genuine is commercial poison, and it appears precisely where customers make their choice.
Reviewers get punished too. Repeat offenders posting fake or misleading reviews about UK businesses have their existing posts deleted and are banned from posting new ones, which over time drains the account farms that sell reviews of their usable inventory.
At the top of the ladder sit profile suspensions for egregious or repeated abuse, and once a Business Profile is suspended, reinstatement is slow, uncertain and increasingly rare for repeat offenders. Losing the profile means losing the map presence, the reviews, and the years of accumulated trust in one decision.
Google reports its enforcement under the undertakings to the CMA for three years, which means the punishing is audited by a regulator with fining powers of its own. Neither side of that arrangement has an incentive to go easy, which is exactly why building on genuine reviews is the only position that gets safer over time.
