- Is it illegal to write fake reviews in the UK?
- Yes. Since 6 April 2025, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 explicitly bans submitting or commissioning fake reviews, and publishing reviews without reasonable steps to keep fakes out. - What is the penalty for a fake review?
- In the UK the Competition and Markets Authority can now fine businesses up to 10% of global annual turnover or 300,000 pounds, whichever is higher, for banned practices including fake reviews, and individuals up to 150,000 pounds. - Most purchased reviews get filtered before or soon after they land, and profiles caught doing it face review removal, blocks on new reviews and, for UK businesses, a public warning banner under Google's 2025 agreement with the CMA. - Yes, increasingly well, though not perfectly. - Yes, on both sides of the transaction. - It depends entirely on what is being boosted. Services that supply reviews from people who never used your business are illegal in the UK and banned by Google. - Is review bombing illegal in the UK?
- Review bombing is not a named offence, but its ingredients usually are: fake negative reviews are banned commercial practices when posted in trade or business contexts, provably false factual claims can be defamation, and coordinated campaigns can amount to harassment. - No, and the reasoning is practical rather than pious: the CMA has estimated that online reviews influence around 23 billion pounds of UK consumer spending a year, so a bought review takes a customer's money under false pretences and takes work from the honest competitor who earned their rating.
