FAQs / SEO Maintenance

What is SEO maintenance?

SEO maintenance is the ongoing work of keeping a website visible in search: monitoring performance, fixing technical issues as they appear, keeping content accurate and current, and responding to algorithm and competitor changes.

SEO maintenance is the ongoing work that keeps a website visible in search after the initial optimisation is done. It covers four things: monitoring (watching what Google Search Console and analytics tell you), technical upkeep (fixing broken links, crawl errors, and speed regressions as they appear), content upkeep (keeping pages accurate, current, and expanding coverage of what customers search for), and adaptation (responding when Google updates its systems or a competitor overtakes you).

The reason it exists is that search results are not static. Google ships thousands of ranking system changes a year, competitors publish new pages every week, and your own site accumulates issues: outdated opening hours, services you no longer offer, links to pages that have moved. A site that got everything right in January can lose ground by June without anyone touching it.

In practice, a sensible maintenance routine for a small business site looks like this: a weekly glance at search performance data, a monthly check for technical errors and content that needs refreshing, and a quarterly review of what customers are searching for that you don't yet have a page for. The volume of work scales with the size of the site. A 300-page programmatic site needs more systematic monitoring than a 10-page brochure site.

Maintenance and growth are different jobs: maintenance protects what you have, growth adds new pages and new coverage for more areas or services, a separate and additive effort. The best results come from doing both, protecting existing visibility while expanding it.

At SEO Pages, we treat maintenance as non-negotiable. Every site we build comes with ongoing monitoring and a weekly report showing real Google data, because a site nobody watches loses ground without anyone noticing.
