Is review boosting illegal?

Review boosting is a marketing phrase that covers two opposite things, and the law separates them cleanly. If the boost means reviews appear from people who never experienced your business, that is submitting and commissioning fake reviews, banned outright in the UK since April 2025 and prohibited by Google. If the boost means more of your real customers get asked, reminded and made able to review you in one tap, nothing about that is illegal or against policy.

Telling the two apart takes one question: where do the reviews come from? A legitimate service needs access to your customers, your job completions, your booking or invoice flow, because your customers are the only people who can compliantly review you. A fake-review service needs none of that, only your money and your profile link, and typically promises a specific number of five-star reviews by a specific date, which no honest process can do.

Guarantees are the other tell. Real customers are free people: some respond, some do not, some leave four stars. Any service guaranteeing volume, star rating or delivery schedule can only meet that guarantee by manufacturing the reviews.

Incentive-based boosting sits in the banned zone too, even with real customers, because Google prohibits rewarded reviews and UK law treats hidden incentives as misleading. A boosting package built on prize draws or discount codes fails on both counts.

So the question to ask any provider is blunt: will every review come from a genuine customer of mine, unpaid and unfiltered, with unhappy ones as free to post as happy ones? If yes, it is process automation and entirely legal. If the answer wobbles, what is being sold is the banned thing with better branding.
